National Tests in Reading and Numeracy

Over the course of Key Stage 3, all of our students are required by Welsh Government to sit National Tests in Reading and Numeracy. These tests are administered by schools at a time of their choosing, and are sat online, with the tests adapting to how students perform as they progress question by question. The tests provide valuable information regarding how students are performing at various stages of their school journey, but more importantly, allow teachers and students to identify areas for development in their planning and learning.

Why are these tests important?

These tests are a Welsh Government requirement and allows you to get a picture of how your child is performing, not just at St Joseph's but also compared to others nationally. These tests also allow us to gather baseline data about your child to ensure that we are offering them the necessary support and challenge in lessons across the curriculum. This data is often used, along with other information, to help inform sets and reporting information. 

What do we do with this data?

After your child has completed their test, their results will be available for you to view on Hwb. We thoroughly analyse this data and use it to make informed decisions on how to best support your child. If necessary, your child will be offered additional support in lesson from their teacher and, in some cases, additional literacy and/or numeracy intervention. Therefore, it's very important that they take this seriously and ensure they complete their test to the best of their ability!
