Inspection Reports

Estyn and Section 50 Reports 2018

The school’s most recent Estyn and Archdiocese Section 50 inspections took place in March 2018.
The reports were published in May 2018.

We are delighted that both reports reflect the commitment and successes of the whole school community, its Catholic ethos and the flourishing of our pupils. All judgments across all categories, made by both inspection teams, were good or excellent.

The Estyn report summary states:

Ensuring that all pupils are both nurtured with care and enabled to achieve their potential is pivotal to the work of St Joseph’s R.C. High School. As a result, many pupils make strong progress, particularly in external examinations at the end of Key Stage 4 and in the Sixth Form. The school is especially successful in promoting its principles of ‘faith in action’. Kindness and consideration for others are demonstrated consistently by both pupils and staff.

The school is highly successful in providing outstanding care, support and guidance within a Catholic community. Strong, principled leadership has ensured high levels of wellbeing and positive outcomes for pupils, as well as good quality teaching and valuable opportunities for staff to develop professionally.

Estyn has invited the school to write and share a best practice case study on how we support our vulnerable pupils and we are pleased that this important aspect of our work will be available to schools across Wales.

The Section 50 Archdiocesan inspection summary notes that the school:

'provides excellent Catholic education' through 'clear, focused leadership’ and ‘consistently good teaching with excellent features.' The inspectors found that pupils are 'extremely proud of their school and its Catholic identity’ and that ‘pastoral care is an outstanding feature of the school.'

Both reports note the high quality of relationships within and outside the school as a strength, which contributes to the continued success of the pupils and school community.
